A team of international researchers have found that genes may increase the risk of baldness in men.
5,000 volunteers took part in the study where volunteers had their DNA analysed. Researchers found two stretches of the genome linked with baldness.
Having the ability to predict hair loss in younger men could boost development of preventive treatments such as propecia, minoxidil or laser regrowth treatment.
Male pattern baldness can be inherited and understanding that is expected to lead to better treatments and a possible cure for
baldness. Male pattern baldness, is also known to be partly caused by male sex hormones.
Professor Val Randall, from the University of Bradford said the work that was being carried out was very exciting, although she was unsure whether men would get any real benefit from knowing if they would lose their hair at an early age.
Professor Val Randall added: “Male pattern baldness has a strong inherited aspect and understanding that may well lead to better treatments and novel approaches.”
Scientists have also discovered that smoking may increase the risk of baldness for some men.
Researchers found that men were more likely to lose their hair if they smoked at least 20 cigarettes a day.
The researchers go on to suggest that smoking may damage the hair follicles, or the roots that circulate blood. Smoking is also associated with grey hair.
Although research continues on genes and other hair loss remedies there are only a couple products on the market that are proven to combat hair loss in men. There products are minoxidil and propecia.
Minoxidil is applied to the head and many men who use this experience a stability in hair loss and some hair regrowth. Minoxidil must be used daily to become effective. Another treatment is propecia. The propecia pill works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT. In clinical trials 83% of men did not experience any further hair loss and some men reported regrowth.
You need a prescription to get propeica however you can buy minoxidil online or in a drug store.
There are other treatments such as hair cloning and laser treatment but no conclusive trials have taken place to confirm their effectiveness in stopping hair loss.
